Why
Become a Judge?
Judges
play an intrinsic role
in gymnastics. They assist with the development of gymnasts
by giving a fair evaluation of each performance.
One may choose to become a judge for many reasons,
including:
- For
the love of the sport
- Contribute
to the growth of the sport
- Give
something back to the sport
- To
see gymnasts improve
- To
meet new people and make new friends
Ratings
A
judge's rating
indicates at which level of gymnastics a judge is
qualified to evaluate.
- Level
5/6 - Compulsory, written test only
- Level
7/8 - Optional, written and practical (film) tests
- Level
9 - Optional, written and practical (film) tests
- Level
10 - Optional, written and practical (film) tests
- Level
5 & 6 and/or Level 8 are entry levels.
- Level
9 and 10 judges are not required to have a Level 5 & 6 rating.
How
to Become a
Gymnastics Judge
- Purchase
study materials for the exams and rule book for the
rating you desire.
- Acquire
a judging rating by taking and
passing a Judges' Exam.
- Become
Safety Certified.
- Safety/Risk Management Certification
is required for all Professional Members, including coaches and judges,
of USA Gymnastics. The Safety/Risk Management Certification
course is required to increase safety and risk management awareness in
the sport of gymnastics. Courses are available online and as a live

- Join
USA Gymnastics.
- USA
Gymnastics is the National
Governing Body (NGB) for the sort of gymnastics in the United States.
USA Gymnastics sets the rules and policies that govern
gymnastics in the United States. Membership in the
organizationis required for participation as a coach, judge or athlete
in USA Gymnastics sanctioned events. Visit the USA

- Join
the National Association of
Women's Gymnastics Judges (NAWGJ).
- NAWGJ
teaches and trains its members, disseminates judging information,
and assigns judging officials to competitions among many other goals.

- Purchase a uniform.
- Purchasing a uniform may not be
necessary immediately for new judges. Wearing navy pants and
a white blouse is acceptable in some cases. A uniform
consists of a
navy skirt and/or pants and a navy blazer with the NAWGJ emblem.
